At the crossroads of cultures
Cosmopolitan casablanca

Casablanca is an enigma for historians. But if its roots are buried in the mists of time, the neighbourhoods that make it up and the monuments that stand there disclose vast parts of its past. Near the harbour, locate the Bastion of Sqala, an 18th-century military structure. Today it is a trendy café-restaurant where you may taste excellent local dishes. Not far distant, just a few steps from the port, the medina unveils its lanes. Rebuilt following the earthquake of 1755, it is the youngest in the country and also one of the most original: inside its walls, Arab-Muslim architecture combines with inspirations from Europe. Amidst this eclecticism, craftsmen are still busy and enliven the district. In the centre, an entirely distinct décor shows itself to you. Here, the distinctive urbanisation, the vast boulevards, the open squares flanked with Art Deco buildings remember the old colonial occupation. And of course, silently, on the edge of the ocean, the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest and most magnificent in the Muslim world. Cross the threshold: Inside, expensive woods mix with marble and onyx; on the columns and ceilings, the symmetry of arabesques and zellij; volutes and intricate doors everywhere. A wonder.
