The Medina of Essaouira is discovered with the strolls in the picturesque lanes, in particular that called “La Scala de la Kasbah”, small way leading to the very heart of the city. There you discover local crafts. Head to the souk, where fruits, vegetables and spices invade the stalls. But the specificity of Essaouira lies in the know-how of craftsmen (especially for the construction of wooden boats), and especially in the manufacture of argan oil, whose tree grows only in this region of Morocco ! Finally, Essaouira is also famous for … its art galleries. The city and its peaceful atmosphere inspire many artists.
Built in the 18th century, the port of Essaouira was once one of the most important trading posts in Morocco. If it is today more like a charming sardine port, it remains an essential step to discover and understand the history of the city, which lives mainly from fishing. In the morning, the return of the boats and the auction are a real spectacle not to be missed. there one can appreciate a nice view of the masts trawlers, and the blue of the ocean stretching as far as the eye can see.
Like many cities in Morocco, Essaouira souk is a plunge into the local culture, the best place to meet the people of the city while shopping. Split into several distinct parts, the souk consists of a fish market (and yes, we are still at the edge of the sea), a spice square, a flea market also called La Joutia, theater auctions, and finally a jewelery market where you can buy beautiful gold or silver jewelery. Not to mention items from Moroccan crafts such as carpets or leather goods and marquetry.
