Nestled in the centre of the country, Azilal is one of Morocco’s little-known beauties. Halfway between the ocean and the desert, the highways converge towards this town and the cultures combine there: Arabs and Amazighs contribute to the peculiar ambiance of the location. Gastronomy is impacted by this crossroads, subjecting the enlightened judgements of your taste buds to a range of foods, one more delightful than the next. The craftsmanship cannot be surpassed: Wool is worked with art here, serving as the basis for producing carpets that make excellent trip keepsakes. The rich history of the region may be found everywhere around. Here is a granary built of clay: fortified, it was used to preserve harvests when they were scarce and times were short; here is a tighermt, a group of fortified houses; and finally there are the remains of fossilised dinosaurs. During the Secondary Period, these gigantic reptiles thrived near Azilal. Today, the Demnate Nature Reserve is attempting to preserve these bones and make them available to visitors. Amateur or die-hard palaeontologists in particular should not miss the opportunity of this visit!
