Taroudant is one of the jewels of southern Morocco, its ramparts a showcase around one of the most picturesque cities in the country. Its crenellated walls reach for 6 miles. Flanked by 130 towers and elegant gates, they give to Taroudant’s particular character, and when the sun shines, it is extremely pleasant to wander in the shade they cast. The city centre is not to be outdone. The former Saadian capital retains riches. Especially its medina: the narrow lanes and lofty façades of the ancient town make for an interesting promenade. A trip through its lanes means discovering old Morocco, soaking up the sounds and smells of ordinary life. Its souks, then: the city of art and history Taroudant is nevertheless a city enlivened by the noise of sellers setting up their stalls, bargaining their items. The Amazigh souk is particularly famous. Every day, pottery, rugs, lamps and consumables are on sale, enabling Moroccans to supply for their needs and tourists to buy attractive souvenirs. Finally, on the edge of the city walls, the tanners beat the skins and manufacture the leathers that make Taroudant’s fame. They work the old-fashioned way, with their hands for tools, moulding bags, pouffes and sandals for the greatest enjoyment of tourists. As you can see, “little Marrakech” has nothing to begrudge its big sister and merits the diversions!
